Craigburn Primary’s “wear a dress” fundraiser for the education of girls in poorer parts of Africa has gone viral, after the SA Senator called it “gender-morphing” and questioned its timing with the same-sex marriage debate.
Senator Bernardi said it was “entirely inappropriate” and “bordering on the absurd”. But the state and federal education ministers — one Labor, one Liberal — both said it was Senator Bernardi’s comments that were ludicrous.
“It’s about creating a scare campaign when there is only one simple question Australians are answering, and that is should same-sex couples be allowed to marry,” said Senator Simon Birmingham, the federal Education Minister.
His state counterpart, Susan Close, said it was a student-led initiative that was raising money for charity, and nothing to do with same-sex marriage.
Reaction to his criticism saw the fundraiser hit more than $50,000 by noon on Thursday. Its original aim was just $900.
Senator Bernardi left the Liberals and formed his own Australian Conservatives party earlier in the year. His usual attire is a dark suit rather than a fabulous frock, but we thought he looked particularly fetching in something a little more glamorous.
