Second South Rd upgrade bridge set to move into Darlington
A KEY part of the $620 million South Rd upgrade in Adelaide will open to traffic this weekend.
A KEY part of the $620 million South Rd upgrade in Adelaide will open to traffic this weekend.
The 3000-tonne, 180m long bridge over the Southern Expressway was constructed offsite and moved into place on remote-controlled trailers.
Federal Urban Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher says the Darlington upgrade will help ease congestion in the area, and is part of a $5 billion infrastructure spend in South Australia.
“We want to ensure people are spending less time stuck in traffic,” he said.
A traffic switch this weekend will reconfigure northbound traffic on Main South Rd and allow for lowered motorway excavation works.
The North-South Corridor upgrade is expected to be complete by mid-2019 and is jointly funded by the state and federal governments.
A second bridge is scheduled to be installed later this year. Premier Steven Marshall said the project was 65 per cent complete and its construction provides about 370 jobs annually.
“The corridor will help cut travel times for commuters, ease traffic congestion and provide a more efficient freight route once complete,” he said.
