First homebuyers have the opportunity to break into the market for well below the median house price, under a new round of 1000 affordable homes now available.
The first 19 properties have already been sold at Dover Gardens, starting at $395,000 for a two-bedroom home.
More will be built at Kidman Park, Tonsley, Kilburn, Edwardstown, Woodville, Blair Athol and Ingle Farm.
The homes cost a maximum $422,000 – well below Adelaide’s median price of $540,000 – and all are expected to be complete by 2025.
The state government has contracted four major builders to complete the project: Scott Salisbury Constructions, Fairmont Homes, Metricon Homes and Rivergum Homes.
It comes after 71 affordable homes were built and sold under the first round of the scheme, overwhelmingly to female and single buyers.
Human Services Minister Michelle Lensink said the data debunked some commentary that women and young people either did not want or could not afford homeownership.
“It’s clear this cohort have snapped up these homes,” she said.
“It’s very encouraging so many women and young South Australians are entering the housing market.”
Those wishing to purchase under the scheme must meet a set of criteria.
Their annual income must be less than $110,000 before tax for a couple or family or $85,000 as a single, they cannot already own any residential property, and must live in the home for at least six months after purchase.
