Two people spotted from above as search and rescue respond to distress signal near Cape Jaffa

SAPOL aircraft has spotted two passengers aboard a sailing vessel from overhead, after a distress signal was sent to 70km northwest of Cape Jaffa on Tuesday.

Police marine search and rescue say they have spotted two people aboard a sailing vessel, after a distress signal was sent out from about 70 kilometres northwest of Cape Jaffa on Tuesday.

Just after 1.30pm on Tuesday, police and emergency services received a distress signal from a sailing vessel about 70km northwest of Cape Jaffa.

Police say the passengers appear to be ok, with a nearby vessel also responding, as they decide how to tow the sailing vessel back to shore.

The State Emergency Service has also dispatched a search vessel from Kingston in a joint effort alongside SA Police.

The Advertiser understands that emergency services have not been able to contact the vessel since receiving the distress signal.

The Advertiser also understands that the signal sent out was not an emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB).
