Nangwarry Football Club fire

A suspicious fire has burned down the clubrooms of the Nangwarry Saints Football Club near Mt Gambier in the state's southeast, causing around $500,000 damage.

The Country Fire Service responded to the fire on the Riddoch Highway in Nangwarry, 30km north of Mt Gambier, just after 11.30pm on Wednesday.

Upon arrival, they found the clubrooms engulfed in flames and little could be done to save the building, the CFS say.

However, 30 firefighters managed to contain the blaze and save the nearby dressing rooms.

The damage bill is estimated at $500,000 and police are treating the fire as suspicious.

There were no injuries.

Fire Cause Investigators and local detectives will attend the scene to find out what started the blaze.

The Advertiser reported on the Nangwarry Saints Football Club last year as they fought to end a four-year losing streak.

This fire adds to the woes of the small town of 500 people, which has been hit with at least 10 fires within the last four years.

In January 2017, The Advertiser reported the community was concerned for its safety after at least seven house fires left a trail of damage over 18 months.
