SA weather: Rain tipped to return to Adelaide over weekend

Brace yourself – Adelaide’s about to cop a drenching and cold conditions. It comes as a tree falls on house at Bridgewater.

Adelaide copped a soaking Wednesday, and more rain is set to roll over the town at the weekend.

While Thursday, Friday and Saturday were expected to remain under 20C with less than 4mm of rain, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday were looking far wetter.

A top of 18 with up to 15mm is forecast for Sunday, with up to 25mm coming Monday, and more rain on Tuesday.

Adelaide received 6.4mm of rain on Wednesday in the 24 hours to 9am, with a top of 17.1C.

A tree fell on a house at Bridgewater on Thursday morning, but little rain has been recorded so far today, causing five internal holes in the roof.

State Emergency Service warning of potential flooding along the Diamantina River in the Far North of SA remained.

The river starts in central west Queensland and flows through Birdsville and the Goyder Lagoons.

“Floodwaters may cut roads and access tracks, and in particular river crossings,” the SES said.

The peak flow entering SA is not expected for up to three weeks.

The causeway at Innamincka was already overtopped, but still passable, but would likely become impassable in the next week or so, the SES said.

People in the Far North and North Eastern districts of SA should prepare by relocating stock, stocking up non-perishable items and readying pumping equipment.

Roads near the Oodnadatta Track, Marree and Woomera were closed last month after those regions were lashed with rain.

It prompted calls for better planning ahead of severe weather.

The coming showers will continue for the rest of the week for Adelaide due to various weather events, senior forecaster from the Bureau of Meteorology Tina Donaldson said.

“There’s a low pressure trough currently over the far west of the state so that’s what’s moving east during the day today and that's what will bring all these showers to Adelaide,” Ms Donaldson said.

“It kind of eases a little bit during the working week then there’s another more significant cold front coming across on the weekend, so a pretty wet forecast particularly for Sunday then much cooler behind that cold front on the Monday.”

While a severe thunderstorm warning for the West Coast and North West Pastoral districts was cancelled for Wednesday, mild thunderstorms were still expected in the Far West of SA.
