SA Water to cut sewerage to up to 150 flood-threatened Mannum homes

Up to 150 homes in low-lying areas of a Murraylands town will be sent help to organise alternatives to the sewerage system, SA Water says.

Cash boost on the way for flood-affected communities in SA

Around 150 homes in low-lying parts of Mannum will have their sewerage connections cut off over the next fortnight.

SA water says the move is necessary while it works on the wastewater system to protect it from looming floodwaters.

The utility has started doorknocking along River Rd, where properties will be disconnected by December 9. It is not known for how long.

Another 100 properties in low-lying areas may need to be cut off later if if floodwaters affect pump stations.

“Properties isolated from the wider sewerage network won’t be able to discharge water from toilets, showers, sinks, drains and appliances, SA Water general manager of strategy, engagement and innovation Nicola Murphy said.

“We’ll be speaking with each resident to understand their intentions, so we can shape appropriate practical support measures and begin planning the network restoration after waters recede.

“By temporarily isolating targeted parts of the network, we will be able to maintain normal wastewater services for the largest part of the community as possible, for the longest time possible.”

Options to help residents stay in their homes might include camp toilets or portaloos.

Residents are also being asked to register their mobile numbers with SA so they can contacted about service interruptions.

“While there are currently no impacts to the safety or reliability of local drinking water services, it’s possiblesome may arise as flows peak and water quality deteriorates,” Ms Murphy said.

“Some of the things we are doing to mitigate this include raising the height of protective embankments, deploying back-up pumps and generators, and storing extra materials and equipment, in case site access and transport routes are cut.”
