THE average residential water bill will go up by $25 after SA Water announced a 2.1 per cent rise.
It comes less than a week after AGL announced a $350 increase to South Australian customers’ annual electricity bill.
Water Minister Ian Hunter said he was pleased the bill increase had been capped in accordance with the consumer price index.
He spruiked reductions in SA Water bills over recent years, which he attributed to prioritising capital works and limiting expenses.
“Over the last four years, SA Water customers have seen a 6.5 per cent decrease in combined water and sewerage bills, which is the largest reduction for urban residential customers out of the 13 similar sized water utilities across the country,” Mr Hunter said.
Opposition water spokesman David Speirs said the increase would be “another kick in the guts” for South Australians doing it tough.
“Skyrocketing utility bills are making it much harder for South Australians to make ends meet,” Mr Speirs said.
“As many vulnerable South Australians face the prospect of having their electricity disconnected this winter, this water bill increase will be yet another kick in the guts.”
