SA town Hawker hit by 4.5 magnitude earthquake in Flinders Ranges

A South Australian town in the Flinders Ranges has been hit by a magnitude 4.5 earthquake with everyone feeling it taking to social media to share their experience.

A South Australian town in the Flinders Ranges has been hit by an earthquake on Saturday afternoon.

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake shook through Hawker, about 365 kilometres north of Adelaide, around 1:22pm.

The quake struck 10 km deep and was felt by 172 people, according to Geoscience Australia.

Many of them took to Facebook to share their experience.

Hawker resident Bev Garrod commented that it was so loud it “shook our house.”

“Moderate house shaking on the outskirts of Quorn, house shook twice!” Bronwyn Filsell in Quorn posted.

Dave Astaire said that it must have been a “biggie” as it was felt nearby in Carrieton where it was “loud and vibrated.”

“We definitely felt it and also heard a low rumbling sound in Stirling North,” Minchin Well commented.

“Definitely felt here in Orroroo,” Colin McDonald commented.

In Canowie Belt, Tania Taylor said that it “rattled the kitchen dresser and windows” lasting “around five to six seconds.”

Bruce Sleep said that it also “rattled the teacups” in Peterborough.

Sitting on several fault lines, Adelaide is no stranger to earthquakes, feeling them regularly.

This includes the Para Fault, which runs from Gawler, under the northern suburbs and CBD, and the Eden-Burnside Fault, which runs under the southern and eastern suburbs.

There’s also the Willunga fault line, which runs from the southern Adelaide Hills, west of the Mt Bold Reservoir, down through Willunga and out to Sellicks Beach.

There have been no reports of damage or serious injury.
