A South Australian police officer who wrote an anonymous letter claiming the state’s policing system is “toxic” is currently suspended from duty and facing disciplinary charges.
On Tuesday, SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens confirmed the author of the letter contacted his office.
“The individual concerned has made contact with my office and identified themselves,” Mr Stevens told ABC Radio Adelaide.
“For context, I should say that this individual is currently suspended from duty and is facing disciplinary charges,” he said.
Mr Stevens explained he did not want to speculate about the motivation of the officer’s actions, but said the author claimed the letter was distributed without their permission.
“The person said they have not distributed it, they’ve only written it,” Mr Stevens said.
Mr Stevens did not specify the reasons for the officer’s suspension.
The Police Commissioner previously rejected the letter’s allegations, which he said were wrong, baseless, offensive and contrary to evidence.
Premier Peter Malinauskas leapt to the top cop’s defence and dismissed the claims.
He refused to give the letter “merit or credence” because the claims “aren’t based on fact”.
