SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens has revealed his family has received touching letters from people whose lives have been saved by the tragic death of his son.

Charlie Stevens was killed when struck by a car at Schoolies Week last November, with his organs donated to others in need.

Commissioner Stevens and wife Emma said Charlie was proud to be an organ donor and took comfort in the fact that it was what he wanted.

“Charlie … he wanted to do that. So we just thought that would keep Charlie with us for a bit longer,” Emma told 7NEWS.

“We never thought when Charlie did tick that box that we’d be in the situation where our family would be asked to confirm his decision. So it made it so much easier knowing that that’s what Charlie wanted,” Commissioner Stevens said.

Charlie’s organs were donated to seven different recipients, three of which have written letters to the Stevens’.

Reading from one of the letters the family received, Commissioner Stevens described the gift Charlie had given to the recipients as “lovely”.

“In many ways, I’ve been given the gift of life again,” he read.

“The opportunity to look at the future and see my kids go through school, reach milestones and maybe even get married … this is what your family has given me.”

In May Commissioner Stevens said he was finding it harder than ever to deal with the loss of his teenage son.

“He’s not here,” he said.

“He’s a big part of our life still but he’s not here and it’s actually harder now for (wife) Emma and I than it was in those early days.

“In those early days our house was busier than Grand Central station, you didn’t really have time to think and there were so many people around us, which we are so grateful for.

“But things get back to normal, people move on which is completely understandable and that circle of people who are there checking in on you reduces quite a lot.”
