SA Pathology Facebook account hacked

Hackers have seized control of a Facebook account for SA’s main pathology provider – with weird how-to videos and links to sexually suggestive posts appearing on the page.

Data shows Australians putting themselves at risk online

Hackers have seized control of SA Pathology’s Facebook account with a series of bizarre video posts including prank thefts and a how-to guide on installing a toilet.

Random videos have appeared on the statewide pathology provider’s feed, along with odd hashtags and accounts being tagged.

Thirteen posts have appeared on the page since early Tuesday morning, including an instructional video on how to “upgrade to a western toilet seat”.

Another shows how “skyshot cracker” fireworks – illegal to possess in South Australia – are made while yet another provides a handy pipe-joining technique for plumbers.

Other clips include a sneak bag thief who stealthily steals other peoples’ luggage and an instructional video for making an underground survival dugout.

Some of the hacked posts include tags to other accounts that appear to have also been taken over with creepy and weird videos on the timeline.

Some are highly sexually suggestive.

The last legitimate post on the page was on October 7, celebrating SA Pathology’s Food and Environmental Laboratory team being named a finalist in the 2024 South Australian Premier’s Food and Beverage Industry awards.

The SA Pathology page has 1900 likes and less than 100 followers.

SA Pathology acting executive director Andrew Collins said there was no risk to patient records or private information because of the hack.

“We are working with Meta to fix our Facebook page as quickly as possible,” he said.

“We don’t store any confidential information on Facebook so all patient data remains secure.

“All SA Pathology services are continuing as normal and no other SA Health account is affected.”

SA Pathology is the statewide pathology provider for the state’s public health system.

No other social media accounts appear to have been affected by the hack, and no details of the page’s descriptions have been altered.

Anyone needing information on SA Pathology services are advised to visit the website or phone 1800 188 077 until the breach is resolved.
