Months after losing their top executive in a bombshell resignation, Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN) has named Kerrie Mahon as their new boss.

The current Department for Health and Wellbeing (DHW) Deputy Chief Executive will take on her new role in February, replacing Professor Kerrie Freeman, who left the top job to run Brisbane City Council as it heads towards hosting the 2032 Olympics.

Professor Freeman’s departure after her 2022 appointment, came as SA Health battled record ramping and a massive construction program in SALHN hospitals.

SALHN Governing Board Chair Mark Butcher was “delighted” to announce her appointment on Friday.

“Kerrie will bring to SALHN over 30 years’ experience as a well-respected senior leader and Chief Executive in healthcare and human services,” he said.

“Her expertise in building strong collaborative teams, her ability to work with systems in complex environments and her alignment with SALHN’s vision for the future made her an exemplar fit for the role.

“As a Board, we are confident Kerrie will be a strong leader who can inspire, lead and manage the organisation into the future to deliver on SALHN’s strategic plan and operational imperatives.”

Prior to working as DHW’s Deputy Chief Executive, Ms Mahon led one of the largest health services in Australia, Metro North Hospital and Health Service in Brisbane, as both Interim Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer.

She was also the Chief Executive Officer for Montrose Therapy and Respite services, a large specialist allied health not-for-profit provider and remained as Executive Adviser post a merger.

DHW Chief Executive Dr Robyn Lawrence was “delighted that Kerrie’s skills and experience will continue to be an asset for SA Health” as SALHN CEO.

SALHN Chief Strategy Officer Jani Baker will continue to act as interim CEO until February 9 with Ms Mahon officially taking the reins the next day.
