SA Book Week gets ‘noice, different, unusual’ with student’s touching Magda tribute
A Riverland student channelled Sharon Strzelecki to perfection for Book Week, hoping to bring joy to cancer-battling Magda Szubanski.
From Wednesday Addams’ gothic style to Anne Boleyn’s Tudor elegance, Annabella Wills is yet to find a Book Week costume she can’t perfect.
But this year the 10-year-old from Waikerie outdid herself, channelling Magda Szubanski’s iconic character Sharon Strezlecki from ‘Kath & Kim.’
Complete with a netball bib, wrist brace and Shazza’s signature orange bowl-cut, she was unrecognisable.
“(Some teachers) said they could see her walking through the quadrangle and they could see it was Sharon but didn’t know who it was,” mum Rachel said.
“When they turned and saw it was Annabella, they just lost it.
“Everyone loved it. They just thought it was amazing.”
It was the easiest costume yet with everything except the wig already at home, she said.
But it was driven by more than just laughs with Annabella wanting to cheer up the comedian who is currently battling cancer.
“She’s the biggest Kath & Kim fan,” Ms Wills said.
“She saw that (Szubanski) was unwell and wanted to pay homage to her.
“Hopefully Magda sees this and it brings a smile to her face.”
Annabella is in the running to be crowned SA’s best Book Week costume for 2025.
Voting is now open and will close on Monday September 1 at 8:30am.
