Captain Matthew Flinders’ remains should be placed in a prominent part of Adelaide, rather than forgotten about in a London cemetery, SA Best MP Frank Pangallo says.
The long-lost burial site of navigator and cartographer Flinders (1774-1814), the first explorer to circumnavigate Australia, was discovered in an old burial ground in London near Euston Station.
It was stumbled upon this week during excavations to build a new high-speed train.
Mr Pangallo said he would write to Premier Steven Marshall to push for Englishman Flinders’ remains to be transferred to Adelaide, and placed in a prominent part of the city.
“Matthew Flinders is one of the most significant figures in our country’s — and state’s — history, paving the way for colonisation 34 years later,” Mr Pangallo said.
“(His remains) should be placed in a prominent part of the city, somewhere where he will be properly remembered and not forgotten as he has for 205 years in an abandoned cemetery near a railway station.”
