SA and Adelaide weather: Another cold snap to bring rain, wind and possible snow this week

BOM declares La Nina alert

The worst of Adelaide’s wet weather has passed for the week, with some parts of the state being thrashed with as much as 24mm in less than 24 hours.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Simon Timcke said small showers were expected throughout Tuesday but most of the predicted rainfall had come and gone.

“We had the cold front move across and we were expecting a band of rain near the front and once the front moved through we expected that rain to sort of head back to showers rather than steady rain,” he said.

“The wettest period has certainly passed the Adelaide area.”

The hills were the worst hit on Monday, with Aldgate copping 25mm, and Verdun receiving 24mm.

“The wettest spots have mostly been around the Mount Lofty Ranges,” Mr Timcke said.

He said the snow expected to fall in the Mount Lofty Ranges would be a small dusting and would likely melt upon hitting the ground.

Earlier, Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Jenny Horvat said flurries of snow could settle in the Mt Lofty Ranges with the cold air in the next 24 hours.

“Maybe on the very tops of Mt Lofty late this evening, early hours of Tuesday, it’s probably not going to settle but not out of the question, so a bit of a cold outbreak coming through,” Ms Horvat said.

A marine wind warning was issued early Monday for coasts in the west, south central, Spencer Gulf, and South East areas.

The wind warning for most coastal parts will continue into Tuesday.

Rain will largely clear for the remainder of the week, and Tuesday will reach a maximum 14C.

It comes as a sheep graziers warning was also issued for rain and cold temperatures expected to affect the Mt Lofty Ranges, Flinders, Mid North and North East Pastoral forecast districts.

“There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions,” the Bureau of Meteorology’s warning states.

BOM last week declared there was a 70 per cent chance of a third consecutive La Nina year, meaning another wet year ahead in Australia.
