The cost-of-living crisis has claimed another significant event – the RSPCA’s Million Paws Walk, which will hold its final fundraising drive this May.
After more than 30 years of community support to fight animal cruelty and raising $17m for animals in need, the not-for-profit charity has announced this year’s event will be its last.
RSPCA Australia chief executive Richard Mussell said the decision followed significant shifts in the fundraising landscape and growing cost of living pressures after Covid.
“The financial strain on animal lovers and increasing event costs has meant Million Paws Walk is no longer able to provide what it once could to the community while also effectively fundraising for much- needed RSPCA services,” Mr Mussell said.
“The RSPCA feels it best to channel resources directly to support the animals in our care, and ensure every dollar supports the critical services and care that have become increasingly costly to provide.”
The national event has been supported by 400,000 dogs and more than 750,000 pet owners since its establishment.
“The RSPCA would like to thank all the superhumans and superpooches that have pounded the pavement with us, as well as the thousands of staff and volunteers that have made our event possible,” Mr Mussell said.
“Thanks a million for being a part of our wonderful life-changing history.
“The RSPCA couldn’t achieve what we do each and every day without your compassionate, generosity and fun spirit.”
Pet owners and their hounds are encouraged to take part in the final walk at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens on Sunday, May 25.
