Riverland man Ronald Daniel Pelly sentenced to eight years jail for raping, choking Adelaide escort

A RIVERLAND man who strangled and raped an escort at a city hotel has been sentenced to eight years jail

A RIVERLAND man who strangled and raped an escort at a city hotel has been sentenced to eight years’ jail.

Ronald Daniel Pelly, 31, had been found guilty of assault causing harm and rape in April last year.

In sentencing today, District Court Judge Sydney Tilmouth said Pelly had strangled the escort unconscious and raped her after she refused intercourse without a condom and other sexual acts.

“You then dragged her to a sofa in the living room and forced ... intercourse upon her without using a condom, while she begged you not to,” he said.

The court heard Pelly had been working in the oil drilling industry in Papua New Guinea and was expecting to fly overseas from Adelaide the following for a holiday.

“You had a bent for unconstrained sex that night, both before and during these events.

“You used overbearing force in degrading, humiliating and usurious circumstances.”

The escort was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital following the attack.

“You would have noticed from the victim impact statement the traumatic consequences for her,” Judge Tilmouth said.

“She, as much as anyone else, is entitled to equal protection before the law.”

He sentenced Pelly to eight years’ jail with a non-parole period of five years.
