Perth-bound travellers could see big savings with the launch of Rex flights from Adelaide to the Western Australian capital on Friday, following years of high airfares.
The regional and domestic airline will kick off the inaugural service with a snap 72-hour fare sale, with prices starting from $149 on the new Perth to Adelaide route.
Rex Chairman John Sharp said the airline was bringing new competition to a “historically very expensive part of the Australian airline network”.
“We are bringing in prices to travel from Adelaide to Perth that we haven’t seen in 10 or 15 years,” he said.
“Our standard price is the best price in the last 10 years and our special prices, our sale prices, the best prices we’ve seen in 15 years.”
Mr Sharp said Rex’s entry to the Adelaide to Perth market means not only access to lower prices but also more choice for travellers.
“[Rex] is Australia’s most reliable airline, with the best on time performance and the lowest cancellation rate and for the last two years has been voted the airline of the year in Australia,” he said.
Mr Sharp said Rex’s entry into the domestic airline market has brought ticket prices down in places where it operates. He urged Australians to support Rex if they want more competition in the airline market.
“They need to support the people who are creating the competition. And that means supporting Rex because wherever we go, we lower the price of airline tickets,” he said.
From Friday, Rex will fly Adelaide to Perth three days a week on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays.
But Mr Sharp hopes to increase that frequency.
“We’d like to take that to daily and ultimately to have more than one per day. That’s the ambition and similarly out of Melbourne, flying to Perth,” he said.
