A British adventurer and filmmaker who became the first person to skateboard across Australia wants to be reunited with the board that carried him on his amazing feat.
Dave Cornthwaite was 26 when he set a world record in 2006 completing an almost 6000km five-month odyssey from Perth to Brisbane – via Adelaide – aboard his trusted steed Elsa.
The board – a unique yellow Rolls Rolls model with green wheels – was displayed in the Australian National Surfing Museum in Torquay, Victoria, and then was stored in a Sydney garage, Cornthwaite said on social media.
“At some point, perhaps five years ago, the occupants moved out and the garage was cleared, and there’s no recollection of where Elsa could have gone next,” he said in a public plea for help.
“There’s a chance she was thrown away but I’m hoping she found her way into the hands (or feet) of someone who cared for her.
“Elsa holds a lot of sentimental value for me, we covered plenty of miles together and she played a huge formative part in my life. She’s a striking looking board and not one to be forgotten for anyone who appreciates board riding.”
Cornthwaite averaged about 70km a day on his cross country marathon reaching speeds of up to 60km/h raising money for charity Sailability Australia.
His amazing feat was documented in a book Board Free. Cornthwaite prepared for the event by skating the 1440km length of mainland UK.
