Punters evicted from Adelaide Oval for skolling beers during Australia’s Second Test, but stadium management denies new ‘rule’

Is Adelaide Oval security cracking down on skolling beers? If the Second Test is anything to go by, it would appear so. What would Bob Hawke think?

Adelaide Oval security appear to has cracked down on the act of skolling beer after dozens of patrons were evicted during Australia’s Second Test against the West Indies last weekend.

Punters on the Oval’s iconic hill have forever been known for providing alcohol-fuelled entertainment as the overs pass by in the cricket, but some of the fun has been brought to a standstill.

While SACA members filled up on full-strength beer and spirits on the village green, the regular patrons in general admission were ousted for skolling mid-strength pints of XXXX Gold.

The Advertiser witnessed dozens of cricket fans succumb to the peer-pressure of the hill crowd and down their beer, only for security to quickly swoop and escort them from the stadium.

It would have the late former Prime Minister Bob Hawke turning in his grave.

But according to Adelaide Oval stadium management, it’s not a “rule”.

“We don’t have a written rule that bans the practice of skolling,” a spokesperson said.

“However, working together with SAPOL, we take the responsible service and consumption of alcohol extremely seriously and therefore reserve the right to exercise discretion when it comes to evictions – particularly when instances of irresponsible behaviour are observed by our security team.”

Joel or “Checkers”, as he likes to be known, joined in the fun on the hill during day two of the test to promote his popular TikTok site Marmalade.

He said people were getting “turfed” by security regularly.

“The crowd would chant for someone to skol and security would sometimes gesture to them not to do it and then after they did, they’d get kicked out,” he said.

“The hill is one of the great places in sport, and if they take all that fun away it will lose its appeal for the younger generation.”

Despite having another prank in mind for his TikTok channel, Joel said he unintentionally introduced milk as a new beverage of choice to skol at the cricket.

“We were actually going to use it for something else, but made the mistake of walking past the hill and of course the chants started, so we skolled,” he said.

He said one other punter who skolled a two-litre bottle was evicted.

“That wasn’t really for the skolling though, he actually spilt most of the milk all over the walkway,” he said.

“There’s some people who have been commenting on our page saying that he got a one-year ban, we want to follow that up because if that’s the case, it’s on us.”

Despite security’s obvious crackdown on the festivities, Joel said they actually deserved some praise.

“It was a pretty enjoyable day. I might get along to the Big Bash, but just as a spectator, I’ll give the Adelaide Oval security a reprieve.”

The Advertiser requested eviction figures from the Adelaide Oval, however a spokesperson said they were recorded for internal purposes only.

“Overall, patrons who attended the day-night Test were well behaved and eviction numbers were in line with previous years and events,” a spokesperson said.

“A number of patrons were evicted for smoking or use of e-cigarettes.”
