It’s easy on the eyes and rolls off the tongue – that’s what the owners hope shoppers will say about a huge upgrade and new name for an ageing Adelaide shopping centre.

A major Prospect shopping centre is getting a $40m upgrade and a new name after refurbishment works started this week.

The name of Northpark Shopping Centre on Main North Rd will change to Prospect Central as part of a project to modernise the centre and improve its amenities.

Works started soon after Prospect Council granted development approval last week for the first of the refurbishment’s two stages.

South Australian company The Duke Group, which owns the centre, said the upgrade would focus on its western entry point, exteriors and interiors.

The upgrade will add shade sails for the present parking spaces, exposed ceiling beams, new skylights, upgraded bathrooms, new seating areas and native landscaping.

Tenancies will also be updated, including the Woolworths which has started out-of-hours works on a multimillion-dollar upgrade of its store.

Duke Group managing director Con Angelopoulos said local community members wanted the centre to be modernised.

“We’re excited to take it into the future as Prospect Central in line with the shifting expectations of our customers,” he said.

“That means updating amenities, branding and refreshing the design – ultimately creating a vibrant local meeting place and retail hub for Prospect locals and the surrounding area.”

Mr Angelopoulos said the centre’s hospitality offering would also be expanded.

Architecture firm Evo Arc is responsible for the design, and construction company SHAPE Australia is undertaking the works.

The Duke Group said it expected the works to be finished by early 2026.
