Child protection expert Professor Leah Bromfield has been named the 2025 Australian of the Year for South Australia.
The 46-year-old was described as “one of the most trusted researchers in (her) field” by judges and serves as director and chair of the Australian Centre for Child Protection.
Ms Bromfield was a chief advocate for Australia’s first National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children in 2007, and in their notes, judges said she had “devoted her life to establishing practical, evidence-based solutions to child abuse for neglect”.
The awards were revealed during a gala ceremony at the Adelaide Convention Centre on Thursday night.
The other nominees were SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens, aerospace engineer Dr Sarah Cannard and cancer researcher Dr Hannah Wardill.
The Senior South Australian of the year was Charles Jackson OAM, 75, an Aboriginal elder for the Flinders Ranges Nation who is campaigning for Wilpena Pound to win World Heritage protection.
Twenty-year-old Amber Brock-Fabel is the Young South Australian of the Year for founding the SA Youth Forum in 2017, which informs government about the views of people aged 14 to 18.
Finally, Sobia and Irfan Hashmi, 48 and 51, are the Local Heroes for SA, having opened six regional pharmacies in previously unserviced areas and helping overseas pharmacists qualify to work in Australia.
Winners from each state and territory will convene in Canberra on January 25, where the nationwide Australian of the Year will be named.’
