Premier Peter Malinauskas says Adelaide Oval would be the “perfect place” to hold cricket matches for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics – and the state government would push to make it happen.
T20 cricket is this week set to be officially admitted as a sport at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
At the following Olympics, to be held in Brisbane in 2032, the Gabba has been announced as the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as other events including track and field.
That means cricket would need to find a different venue.
Mr Malinauskas said it would make sense to host Olympic cricket matches in Adelaide.
“Adelaide Oval is the best cricket venue in the world, so it would be the perfect place to host Olympic cricket in 2032,” he said.
“Adelaide successfully hosted Olympic football games at Hindmarsh Stadium during the Sydney 2000 Games.
“While the Brisbane Olympics are still nearly a decade away, the state government will be doing everything we can to put South Australia in the best possible position to host Olympic events, including cricket.”
The decision to include cricket will need to be ratified by the International Olympic Committee in Mumbai, India, next month.
Cricket has only been held at one past Olympic Games – at Paris in 1900.
