Popular Port Adelaide Kmart store to close in early 2024, centre confirms

The final day of trade for a western suburbs Kmart store has been announced, despite the shock closure being met by massive backlash from locals.

The date has been set for the closure of a popular western suburbs Kmart store, despite backlash from local shoppers.

Kmart Port Adelaide, inside Port Adelaide Plaza shopping centre, will close on May 25, 2024 – with more than 100 team members to be affected.

A Kmart Australia spokesperson said the company had made the decision to close the store after a regular review that determined the community could be supported by nearby stores at West Lakes and Churchill Rd.

In a statement, Port Adelaide Plaza said it was “disappointed” by Kmart’s decision and would explore options for its replacement, including a downsized “contemporary department store” or a new discount department store.

It said various “mini majors” – a retail outlet of between 600sq m to about 1500sq m – were also being considered.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the continuing invigoration of the Centre as a vibrant, modern retail experience,” a spokesperson said.

“We look forward to delivering a modern contemporary, first-class destination in the heart of an ever-evolving Port Adelaide and anticipate sharing our plans shortly.”

Earlier this year, Kmart Australia said the store’s permanent team members would be redeployed across other Kmart stores and Wesfarmers businesses.

The decision was met by disappointment from local shoppers, who took to social media and The Advertiser to voice their concerns.

“Lived in the Port area for over 20 years … they closed the TAFE – still vacant – and at a time when SA needs upskilling,” Advertiser reader Katherine said.

“Closing the Kmart is the same backwards thinking that has impacted the Port business community. We don’t want Burnside Village or DFO, we want our community to thrive.”

Others labelled the decision a “screw up” for senior members of the community who relied on public transport to do their shopping.

“Bad news for everyone living in the Port Adelaide area. I buy from this store often now I will have to drive to West lake, I shop at Coles and all the local shops, all these shops will now suffer. Think again Wesfarmers,” reader Marlaine said.
