Police have searched a Whyalla home belonging to the estranged aunt and uncle of
alleged wife killer Kevin Jewell – as a statewide manhunt for the “armed” and “dangerous” father intensifies.
Officers on Wednesday evening searched the Whyalla home of David Jewell and Amanda Jewell after their nephew was last seen heading north from Port Wakefield on Tuesday night.
Ms Jewell said officers searched her home, including the shed and back rooms, for about 15 minutes before leaving the property.
She said police asked whether the couple knew where their nephew’s regular camping spots were and whether or not they knew his whereabouts.
“They asked if we knew where he’d go,” Ms Jewell said.
“It’s just been a blur.”
Mr Jewell allegedly shot and killed his wife Jodie Jewell at their Modbury North home on Tuesday night before fleeing and sparking the statewide search.
Ms Jewell said neither her nor her husband had spoken with their nephew for about a decade.
She said Mr Jewell had estranged himself from most of his immediate family, including his parents.
“He’s basically estranged from everybody,” she said.
She said Jodie was being remembered as a “beautiful lady”.
“She was just always there for her daughter,” she said.
Ms Jewell said Jodie would often make an effort to catch up when she visited Adelaide.
“She was just a gem really,” she said.
“She was always there for everyone.
“It’s just bloody sad.”
A statewide land and air search intensified on Wednesday night for the fugitive.
Police described the man as average build, around 90kg, 178cm and of a “scruffy appearance”, with an alert sent to more than 5000 police officers across South Australia.
Major Crime Investigation Branch boss Detective Superintendent Des Bray urged anyone who spotted Mr Jewell to immediately contact police and not approach him.
Traffic cameras 5km south of Port Wakefield last captured him driving his white 2008 Mitsubishi Triton ute, registration XTN-167, north at 7.28pm on Tuesday.
Det Supt Bray said there was “some talk” he has travelled to the state’s northern areas, the Mid North or the West Coast.
He said there was an “enormous amount of resources” devoted to finding Mr Jewell, who he said liked “setting up in the bush”.
“Realistically he could be anywhere in the state,” he said.
“He’s obviously dangerous because he knows he’s wanted and he knows what he’s done, and he probably doesn’t want to go to prison.”
Witnesses reported seeing Mr Jewell load camping gear including a backpack, an Esky and other bulky items from his home into his ute.
Police urged anyone with information to contact police immediately on 131 444 or 000 in an emergency.
