A MAN who was found hiding behind a fence has been arrested after heavily armed police surrounded a Goolwa house in a stand-off that lasted more than six hours.

STAR Group officers and the armoured Bearcat vehicle were called to the Elder St house, near the corner of Gardiner St, about 3pm on Tuesday.

Part of the street was cordoned off and traffic restrictions were in place while police negotiated with the man inside the house.

The Advertiser understands the man refused to speak to police leading to a lengthy stand-off.

No one else was inside the house and it had not been known if the man was armed, police said. The 29 year-old man from Goolwa was arrested shortly after 9pm and charged with aggravated robbery, assault, false imprisonment and threats to kill.

Police will allege that, on August 11, the man threatened another man with a knife, forced the victim into his own car and also assaulted him.

Earlier, nearby Goolwa Primary School was not placed into lockdown but was given notice for people to avoid the exclusion zone.

The man was refused police bail and will appear in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court today.
