A young man is fighting for life after he was struck by a car while changing a tyre on the side of the Port River Expressway.

The pedestrian, a 23-year-old man from Taperoo, was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a critical condition after he was treated by paramedics at the Wingfield scene.

Emergency services were called to the serious collision roughly 300 metres west of Hanson Rd on the expressway at around 3.50pm.

It is understood the pedestrian pulled over in the stopping lane to change a tyre on his grey Subaru Forester 4WD.

Then, another driver in a silver Toyota RAV4 ploughed into him from behind before pulling over.

The driver, a 71-year-old man from Enfield, was not physically injured but was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he had a sample of his blood taken.

Ryan Spoolder, 29, arrived at the scene to help tow his girlfriend’s car after she was involved in a rear-end collision with another vehicle that slowed down to view the wreckage.

“When I got here, there were at least a dozen people crowding him trying to help,” he said.

His partner Ebony Vertigan, 27, said ambulance crews put up a yellow tarp to shield the man from view.

“It at least gave him some privacy so people didn’t peek at it,” she said.

The pedestrian has been taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital and is in a critical condition.

Eastbound traffic on the expressway was temporarily reduced to a 25km/h crawl as Major Crash investigated the cause of the crash.
