Petrol price hits 199.9c/l at Mogas service station in Parafield Gardens

A SERVICE station in Adelaide’s north has pushed up petrol prices to 199.9c/l — and even the console operator at the servo says customers “should really shop around”.

PETROL was selling for a record high 199.9c/l at a northern suburbs outlet today — more than 80c/l above the average — and motorists were buying it.

The Mogas station at Parafield Gardens on Wednesday began charging the exorbitant price the RAA said was higher than bowser prices hit in 2008, when the cost of a barrel of oil was $US155 — or about $US100 more than it is today.

Premium unleaded was even more — 220.9c/l.

The console operator at the site said he was just setting the price he was told to and he was surprised people were still filling up.

“You do get some loyal customers who fill up and are pissed — I wouldn’t pay this much money but I’ve been told to sell it,’’ operator Vas Georgiou said.

“People fill up then look at the price and are asking for refunds — they should really shop around.’’

The family, which leases the site from Mogas, said it had been bought by On The Run this month. However, OTR had not renewed their lease and the current operators were therefore trying to maximise profit from the existing stock of fuel.

“This month Mogas sold to OTR and OTR have not renewed our lease or are willing to buy our stock,” said Peter, who didn’t provide his surname.

Peregrine Corporation, which owns On The Run, said it did not set the extraordinary price at the Parafield Gardens’ site.

A spokeswoman said Peregrine had purchased the Mogas wholesale fuel distribution business this month.

The RAA said On The Run owned around 40 per cent of metropolitan fuel outlets — the most of any company in Adelaide.

RAA senior analyst Chris West said Mogas was a brand and the sites were owned by independent operators.
