CORRECTIONAL services is investigating how a serial pedophile managed to send a letter from prison addressing one of his alleged victims.

Mark Trevor Marshall was jailed indefinitely for child sex offences in 2009 but he was able to get a letter to the mother of an alleged victim who was aged just five at the time of the offending.

The revelation comes as Marshall makes his latest bid to be released from prison.

A Correctional service spokesman confirmed the letter had been sent by Marshall and an investigation was underway to determine how this happened.

“All outgoing mail from Marshall was flagged by intelligence since he has been convicted,’’ the spokesman said.

It is possible the letter has either slipped through the security net or was smuggled out of prison by a third party.

Marshall agreed in April to postpone his release bid in order to undertake post-traumatic stress counselling in an effort to boost his rehabilitation.

He agreed to a six-month delay of his application to be permitted back into the community under strict licensing conditions.

Marshall’s first bid for freedom was made in 2011 but he remained behind bars because no suitable accommodation could be found for him.

The Advertiser subsequently revealed in December of that year that prison authorities had found photographs and names of children, as well as maps of suburbs, in Marshall’s cell.

Marshall has a history of offending against children going back to 1987.
