AN elderly woman has died after being hit by a truck in Gawler on Friday.

Emergency services rushed to the intersection of Bridge St South and Julian Terrace just before 11.30am in response to reports that a senior citizen using a walking frame had been struck.

Paramedics treated the 83-year-old woman at the scene before an ambulance rushed her to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with serious injuries.

She died before the ambulance could reach the hospital.

Cafe Nova owner Jim Vallelonga saw ambulances converge on the scene from his restaurant.

“A lady was on a stretcher — she didn’t look well,” he said.

Mr Vallelonga said he often saw the woman walking around the town.

Jessica McCann lives near the crash scene and said she had seen many near misses involving cars and pedestrians at the intersection.

Mrs McCann said the pedestrian crossing lights didn’t give people enough time to cross the road.

“It’s green to go and then all of a sudden it flashes red and the cars come flying around the corner,” she said.

“I hope Gawler Council fixes the problem.”

SA Police closed Bridge St between Whitelaw Tce and Murray St, and Major Crash detectives are investigating.

Her death takes the State’s road toll to 44, it was 43 at the same time last year.
