The victim of a shark attack has made an astonishing recovery as she leaves hospital a week after the frightening experience near one of the state’s most picturesque beaches.
Much-loved SA grandmother Pamela Cook was finally discharged from hospital on Tuesday and gave her gratitude to those who supported her through the ordeal.
Mrs Cook was all smiles as she walked out of Mt Gambier Hospital with husband Greg to return home.
“Hi, how are you,” Mrs Cook said to 7NEWS as she walked out of hospital.
“Very pleased to be going home,” she said. “I just want to thank everyone.”
“I want to thank everyone for all the attention here at the hospital, they’ve been amazing.
“And I’m looking forward to getting home and getting better.”
Once she’s fully recovered Mrs Cook said she plans on getting back in the water.
The 64-year-old swimming enthusiast was attacked by a suspected juvenile great white shark at 7.45am on the morning of October 2 near Beachport jetty, while she was on her morning swim with friends.
Mrs Cook was aided by shocked bystanders who heard her screaming and rushed to administer first aid by using a T-shirt to stop the bleeding, before emergency services arrived.
She was rushed to Mt Gambier Hospital were she remained in a stable condition after undergoing urgent surgery.
The attack, a rare incident in the cold waters, temporarily closed the picturesque beach, located 380km southeast of Adelaide.
Authorities attempted to search for the shark with boats and drones but were unable to find it.
