"It's pathetic": Hanson unloads on Leyonhjelm, Hanson-Young stoush

GREENS Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has raised $50,000 in just four days to fund legal action against NSW Liberal Democrat Senator David Leyonhjelm over their bitter slanging match.

On Friday morning a gofundme page, established by public health expert Emeritus Professor Simon Chapman and author Jane Caro, had raised $50,272 in four days, after 1,476 people pledged their support.

Senator Hanson-Young said this morning the support had been heartening.

EXPLAINER: Leyonhelm takes aim at Turnbull, refuses to apologise

“For the last week people have been saying ‘how can we help?’,” she said.

“When Jane and Simon set up the page it provided the opportunity.

“Every little bit is helping.

“This is really important, this is a fight for decency in the community and our workplaces.”

Senator Leyonhjelm is also seeking donations to defend defamation action from Senator Hanson-Young and says any excess funds will be used to fight the Greens at elections.

He has refused to apologise and compensate the SA Green for comments he made about her personal life in media interviews.

Senator Hanson-Young will meet with her lawyers today in a bid to determine her next steps in her action against Senator Leyonhjelm.

The South Australian senator has promised to donate any defamation payout to charity.

If her bid to sue Senator Leyonhjelm is successful any compensation will be divided evenly between charities Plan International and SA’s Working Women’s Centre.
