Dr Sam Shahin has challenged his counterparts on The Advertiser’s list of South Australia’s 50 Most Influential People to “put that ‘influence’ into action to serve country and state”.
The Shahin family, which was number eight on the list published last week, has built a $150 motorsport park at Tailem Bend and employs 4400 people across Peregrine Corporation, including 3100 people across nearly 150 OTR outlets.
Dr Shahin - the executive director of Peregrine Corporation - is offering to organise a professional conference of the state’s top 50 influencers, aimed at thrashing out ideas for “meaningful actions for the good of SA”.
His challenge, issued through Twitter, was applauded by tennis champion Roger Rasheed and Adelaide Crows board member and Brownlow Medallist Mark Ricciuto.
“Go for it, Sam, I think it’s a great idea!” Ricciuto said, while Rasheed said: “Like your thinking.”

Dr Shahin, who is recovering from a major crash during qualifying for the Bathurst 12 hour endurance race earlier this month, told The Advertiser there had been an overwhelmingly positive reaction to the tweet, published on Sunday morning.
“I’ve already had contact from various people about the post and I hope more will come forward. I hope that everyone that appears on that list does feel the weight of responsibility around their neck to repay what SA has given them in terms of opportunity,” he said.
Dr Shahin in 2016 urged a River Torrens marina, 40km/h city speed limit and shark nets at beaches in a 10-point plan for a more vibrant Adelaide, published in The Advertiser.
An executive director of the Kensington-based Peregrine Corporation founded by his late Palestinian refugee father, Dr Shahin at the time said Adelaide must have clear objectives about what the city should be and then debate the strategies to achieve them.
