ALL major retailers have announced price hikes in excess of $300, with Origin Energy announcing a rise just shy of 16 per cent.
Origin’s average price rise of $313 for residential customers on a standing contract will take bills to just over $2200.
Gas prices will also rise by 9.4 per cent — a hike of $74 a year.
Small business customers will see their electricity costs rise by $920.
Origin’s hike is the smallest increase announced by the three major retailers — after EnergyAustralia announced a $390 increase and AGL’s average bill soared by $338.
Origin executive general manager of retail, Jon Briskin, said the most vulnerable customers would be protected from rising power prices by “ensuring those in our hardship program will not pay this price increases”.
State Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis has urged consumers to shop around and get off standing offers — a retailer’s most expensive, standard contract.
