A new online portal has been launched to help jobseekers find work within the naval shipbuilding sector.

The federal government’s Naval Shipbuilding College and Australia’s defence industry joined forces to create the portal, which aims to showcase opportunities generated by the naval shipbuilding program.

Defence Industry Minister Melissa Price said the new jobs portal would make it easier for jobseekers to move into careers in the shipbuilding sector, with opportunities ranging from trades to PhDs.

The jobs portal allows jobseekers to search for vacancies within the shipbuilding industry, update their job profile, select target organisations and apply quickly and securely.

It also allows industry recruiters to connect with qualified workers who are registered on the College’s National Workforce Register.

The college is a government initiative that has been tasked with building Australia’s naval shipbuilding workforce.

“If you are interested in learning more about career opportunities in shipbuilding and advice about training pathways, I recommend you connect with the Naval Shipbuilding College and join the national Workforce Register,” Ms Price said.

Meanwhile, a further 10 Naval Group Australia engineers have arrived in Cherbourg, France, to undertake training to assist with Australia’s Attack-class submarine program.

They have joined 40 local colleagues already there.

Naval Group Australia staff who travel to France spend up to three years receiving on-the-job training from some of the world’s top experts before returning home to work on the submarine program.

The Advertiser last week reported that the Defence Department was investigating a plan B for the $89 billion Future Submarines program in case French company Naval Group cannot go ahead.

There have been tensions between Naval Group and the Defence Department over the cost and time frame of the Future Submarines.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is expected to discuss the project with French President Emmanuel Macron at the G7 summit in the UK this week.
