THE scandal-plagued Oakden Aged Care home will finally close today as its last two patients are transferred to new facilities.
Former SA Mental Health and Substance Abuse Minister Leesa Vlahos announced the closure of the mental health facility on April 20 — following the release of a report by the Chief Psychiatrist which chronicled patient abuse.
The scathing report prompted ICAC and federal inquiries.
Health authorities will transfer the final two patients from Oakden’s Clements House to Northgate House on Friday. It follows the closure of the Makk and McLeay wards in June.
Decommissioning of the facility will begin next week.
Mental Health and Substance Abuse Minister Peter Malinauskas said the transfer of last patients was an important milestone.
“These residents are some of our state’s most vulnerable people, and deserve to have safe, modern and appropriate mental health care facilities,” he said.
“The closure of Oakden fulfils the State Government’s commitment to relocate the residents and close the facility.”
