Nilpena Ediacara National Park in SA seeks senior ranger

It’s being touted as the best job in SA – as long as you like being on your own and gazing up at the stars in the great outdoors. Oh, and you’ve also got to really “dig” fossils.

10 ultimate things to do in SA

“Wanted, one senior park ranger.

Must enjoy isolation and starry nights.

Duties include cleaning the visitor centre and looking after the fossil remains of some of the oldest multicellular animal life on earth.”

The soon-to-be opened Nilpena Ediacara National Park is hiring, and those in the know are calling it an opportunity of a lifetime.

The park, in the northern Flinders Ranges between Leigh Creek and Parachilna, is scheduled to open in late April and is home to the world’s best examples of Ediacaran fossil fauna, laid down in the ancient sea bed half a billion years ago.

Once open, visitors will be required to take an organised guided tour to gain access through the park to ensure the in situ fossil beds are protected. Enter the new park ranger.

“Nilpena is a unique and exciting part of South Australia,” Environment Minister Susan Close said.

“When it opens later this year, the park is set to become a must-see destination for tourists, researchers and educators alike, attracting visitors from all over Australia and from across the world.

“The inaugural senior ranger at Nilpena Ediacara National Park will play an important part in this new park.”

National Parks and Wildlife Manager for the Flinders and Outback, Tony Magor, said it was an exciting position bound to attract a lot of interest.

“The protection of an internationally significant assemblage of Ediacaran fossils, which is the centre piece of the current Flinders Ranges World Heritage nomination, and working with researchers, including world renowned palaeontologists, makes this a truly unique role,” Mr Magor said.

“I encourage people to consider applying for what I think is SA’s best job. It’s certainly going to be one of the most exciting roles with the park opening to the public later this year.”
