The locations of 10 new red light and speed cameras have been revealed, as the State Government moves to crackdown on drivers hooning close to suburban primary schools.

Six of the 10 cameras will be installed near primary schools, with Transport Minister Stephan Knoll saying the locations had been carefully selected to improve road safety.

They will be turned on from October, bar one on Goodwood Road that will only be installed once work to realign the intersection with Daws and Sprinkbank roads has been completed.

The government promised to install the new cameras in January after an audit found they mostly helped to reduce crashes, but removed safety cameras on Glover Ave in the city and Frederick Road in Royal Park.

Mr Knoll said the locations were picked based on driver behaviour, crash history and the presence of vulnerable road users.

Signs indicating there is a camera in the area will also be installed.

“These cameras will improve safety for all road users by targeting drivers who run red lights and speed through intersections and pedestrian crossings near schools,” he said.

“Reckless speeding is idiotic behaviour that puts lives at risk and can increase the possibility of a crash.”

The new cameras will be located at:

— Maxwell Road/Main North Road intersection, Parafield;

— Main North Road/Tolmer Road intersection, Elizabeth Park;

— Globe Derby Drive/Port Wakefield Road intersection, Globe Derby Park;

— Tapleys Hill Road/Old Port Road intersection, Royal Park

— Walkleys Road/Montague Road intersection, Ingle Farm

— Stephen Terrace pedestrian crossing, Walkerville

— Marion Road pedestrian crossing, Park Holme

— Beach Road pedestrian crossing, Morphett Vale

— Ascot Ave pedestrian crossing, Vale Park

— Goodwood Road/Daws Road/Sprinkbank Road intersection, Daw Park (once realignment completed)
