The Frome Rd school will open in 2019 for Year 8 and 9 students and will eventually have 1250 students, but zoning and enrolment details are yet to be determined.
Its contruction will support more than 200 jobs.
Education Minister Susan Close said it would be “one of the nation’s best public schools”.
Asked if demand for places would be so high that some students would have to be turned away, she said parents should always consider their nearest high school first.
