A private primary school in Adelaide’s northeastern suburbs is set to expand to accommodate massive enrolment growth.
St Martin’s Catholic Primary School in Greenacres is set to build a new two-storey building which will accommodate 54 new students after its enrolments increased more than 50 per cent in the last five years.
The Reception to year 6 school currently has 620 students and 44 staff and the new development will increase enrolments to about 700 and provide capacity for 13 more staff.
The development will comprise eight general learning areas, performing arts and music classrooms and breakout spaces.
The area will also include a kitchen and amenities.
The new raised building will create an undercover area below which will be used for play and outdoor learning spaces.
A large out of school hours care facility will also be constructed.
The school will also construct a new staff car park to accommodate 48 spaces.
A single storey dwelling and part of the eastern wall of the school hall will be demolished to make way for the development.
St Martin’s principal Christine Comas said the development plans came after “strong growth in enrolments”.
“We are excited to be planning this next stage of development which will provide us with greater flexibility in our learning spaces,” Ms Comas said.
“We look forward to taking the project to the next stage following approval.”
St Martin’s recently acquired neighbouring residential properties and expressed interest in purchasing a portion of the Princes Rd reserve adjacent the school to further expand.
The school has previously completed works on a new junior school building, admin and learning spaces and a play area upgrade.
The school could not confirm the cost of the new building.
The plans are open for community consultation until Monday.
