A new Park ‘n’ Ride – featuring at least 400 parking spaces – will be built at Tea Tree Plaza, the state government has announced.

The $48.5 million facility will be built near the existing 700-space Park ‘n’ Ride, bringing the total number of spaces to 1100.

The funding will be included in the state budget on Tuesday.

However, the Opposition says the cost of the project has blown out by more than $30 million.

Premier Steven Marshall said the new Park ‘n’ Ride would create 215 full-time equivalent jobs during construction.

Transport Minister Corey Wingard said Park ‘n’ Ride projects “have a real impact to people that live in these communities”.

“No longer will motorists be forced to drive around in circles at the existing facility looking for a free spot and no longer will they need to spill out on to suburban streets surrounding the plaza when they can’t find one,” he said.

Mr Wingard said construction was well underway on a $33 million Park ‘n’ Ride at Golden Grove and the government had already delivered a new $23 million facility at Paradise.

Labor says the cost of the Tea Tree Plaza Park ‘n’ Ride had blown out by more than $30 million.

It says when it was in government it committed $15 million towards new facilities at Tea Tree Plaza and Klemzig.

The Liberals, when they came into power in 2018, focused on creating a Park ‘n’ Ride at Paradise.

“Three years after scrapping this project, Steven Marshall expects the northeast community to trust him when he makes this promise in the lead up to another election,” Labor MP Blair Boyer said.

If he was serious about this important local project, he would have followed through with the original plan and locals would already be using the expanded Tea Tree Plaza Park ‘n’ Ride.”

Mr Marshall said $15 million would “change a bit of curbing” and the $48 million project would deliver "what is needed here”.

Construction work on the new Park ‘n’ Ride is expected to begin in early 2022 and be completed in the second half of 2023.
