The $16 million rebuild of the visitor centre at Flinders Chase National Park on Kangaroo Island has started.
The centre was destroyed in the 2020 bushfires, along with 96 per cent of the park.
The new tourist hub has been designed by award-winning Troppo Architects — who also designed the Bowali Visitor Centre in Kakadu National Park.
“The building will set a new national standard for ecologically sustainable development, with minimal impact to the environment both during the build and once complete,” Environment Minster Susan Close said.
“This ecologically sustainable building will power itself for most of the year and be entirely self-sufficient in terms of water use and recycled wastewater.”
The centre will be framed with sustainably sourced bushfire-resistant timber, with the walls made of rammed earth.
The University of Adelaide is contributing $2 million toward the rebuild.
The government said the Kangaroo Island Tourism industry contributes $140 million every year into the regional economy and the recovery of the visitor centre is vital for the recovery of the island.
Construction of the centre is expected to be completed in 2024.
