The family of a man allegedly murdered beside his mother in their Rosewater home has spoken of his devastation when he learned of the “loving father” and “lovely woman’s” deaths.
Steve Tozer, 55, and Antoinette Tozer, 76, were allegedly murdered by a 43-year-old man in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Police were called to the home shortly after 1pm after Steve’s sister and Antoniette’s daughter discovered their bodies in the Rosetta St home.
Steve’s son Joshua Tozer, 23, said he was shocked to hear of his father’s death and fondly remembered the last time he saw him around Christmas.
“He loved us a lot,” he said.
“He was a loving father.”
He also said his grandmother always had a welcoming presence and was a “lovely woman”.
Denise Palmer, 52, the ex-partner of Steve and mother of his two sons Matthew, 25, and Joshua, 23, said he would always be remembered in her heart.
“He’s always been in my heart … it’ll be worse now because I always wondered how he actually really did feel,” she said.
Ms Palmer said she was scrolling on Facebook after 6pm on Saturday night when she saw a news package about the alleged murder.
“Josh and I tried to call Steve,” she said.
“(We) went down there … the street was cordoned off and we knew it was true.”
Ms Palmer, who was in a relationship with Steve for 18 years, said having children with him was a “blessing”.
“Having kids with him is a blessing. I really love the family,” she said.
The 52-year-old said, although her sons didn’t see much of their father, he was loving toward them since birth.
“I was glad he was around,” she said. “He was great when I was giving birth.”
Ms Palmer said she last saw Steve in January when he came around to her house and hadn’t heard from Antoinette since Christmas Eve.
“Antoinette was lovely,” she said.
“We’ve had good times – good family times. They always made me feel welcome.”
Ms Palmer said Steve worked as a dedicated spray painter while they were together up until 2006 and would spend his weekends having fun down at the pub.
“He had a sense of humour,” she said.
Ms Palmer said her former sister-in-law went to check on the pair when she discovered their bodies.
Police then attended the scene and closed off Rosetta St for several hours while Major Crime detectives investigated.
A short time later, a 43-year-old man staying at a housing trust property across the road was arrested and charged with two counts of murder.
He will appear at the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday.
The government refused to comment on whether the house the man was staying at was tenanted and whether he was meant to be living there.
Ms Palmer said she and Joshua went to Steve’s sister’s house on Saturday night where they shared fond memories of their relatives.
“I’m really feeling for (her),” she said.
The family, although visibly upset, said they are going to try their best to focus on the good memories in the coming days.
Residents rocked by Rosewater deaths
A resident of a western suburbs street where a mother and son were found dead in their home has spoken of his shock.
Shaji Kunjunju, 54, who lives on Rosetta St, Rosewater, said the street was usually quiet.
“We are pretty upset and scared to live here now,” he said.
A man will face court on Monday charged with murder after the two bodies were found with “significant injuries” inside their home.
Police were called to a home in Rosetta St at 1.20pm on Saturday after Antoinette Tozer, 76, and her son, Steve Tozer, 55, were found dead by concerned relatives.
Relatives and emotional friends went to the property and broke down in tears after speaking with police. CCTV shows the family on the street after their loved ones were discovered.
A short time later, police arrested a 43-year-old man, of no fixed address, who had been residing across the road from the house. He was interviewed by detectives and charged with two counts of murder.
Police say no other suspects are being sought at this time and the incident is not believed to be random. Police suspect the alleged murder occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Detectives returned to the address about 10am on Sunday and remained in the house for about two hours, before leaving with several evidence bags.
The Advertiser understands the investigation has concluded and cleaners will be going to the property at some time on Sunday.
Mr Kunjunju said he wasn’t close to Steve and Antoinette Tozer but always found them friendly.
“They are friendly and nice people I think,” he said.
Mr Kunjunju said he had seen the man who was arrested on Saturday a few times.
“In my mind I saw him but I don’t know how many times,” he said.
Another neighbour – who has asked to remain anonymous – said she had lived in the neighbourhood for 25 years and was familiar with Mr Tozer.
“I haven’t seen the mother but I know Steve, in fact, I thought he was the only one living in the house,” she said. “I’ve seen him here, he would ride his bike or walk in front of my house regularly.”
The neighbour claims to have heard ominous sounds early on Saturday morning from her courtyard outside.
“Before going to bed around 1am I stepped into my courtyard and I heard something like an argument,” the neighbour said.
“I could hear a male voice saying ‘no’ several times and I also heard a loud bang but that could have been firecrackers.”
Charles Crossley, 67, a resident of the area, was shocked to learn about the deaths. Mr Crossley said apart from some loud music occasionally at night their street is very quiet.
“I used to work around here and I would walk past these houses at night and I could hear music, (it) was just ‘boom, boom, boom’,” he said.
“This street is just so quiet and nothing like this has ever happened before.“I think it’s disgusting, I can’t comprehend it at all, I really can’t.”
Police say no other suspects are being sought at this time and the incident is not believed to be random.
