Muck-up day mayhem: Adelaide celebrities tell all on their final days at school

It’s muck-up day for year 12s across SA. From urine-filled balloons to sneaky discos and a school captain suspension, local celebs dish the dirt on their final days at school.

Year 12s get into the spirit of end of school muck-up day

It’s muck-up day today for year 12s across the state.

What happened in years gone past? Some Adelaide celebs tell us the mischief they got up to on their last official day of school.

Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald, Nova Sydney breakfast radio host

“This photo was from the night before muck-up day at Wirreanda High in ‘93. We had an all-nighter and then went to school in the girls’ uniforms. Plenty of balloons filled with well hydrated urine.”

“So my muck-up day at Loreto College was actually cancelled/banned, due to the year 12s when I was in year 10. They went to the butcher and got ox’s tongue with all the blood and guts. Wrapped it up in nice boxes with ribbon and gave it to some of their teachers. I remember one of the teachers who received it was pregnant and threw up.

“So due to not having a muck-up day, me and my friends dressed up in some weird outfits with masks and made a video all around the school. This is me climbing the heritage-listed building at school.”

Liam Stapleton, Nova Adelaide breakfast radio host

“I started a glam rock band called ‘Love Sabre’ and we performed three songs on the oval on muck-up day… I tried to burn all of the footage but Ben went digging and published it online. What a great mate.”

Luke Schapel, Adelaide Polo Classic Event Director

“I was school captain of Rostrevor at the time. The day of muck-up day, my friends and I had breakfast together. We were leaving to head back to school (I was driving!) and on the way, a friend threw a water bomb (pre-prepared for the day’s festivities) at another vehicle.

“The vehicle chased us back to school and made a scene in front of the junior primary onlookers.

“I was called to the headmaster’s office midmorning to explain myself and suspended then and there for my involvement. To this day, I’m the only school captain to be suspended... and on the morning of muck-up day no less.”

Tessa Doumanis, Port Adelaide AFLW player

“I graduated from high school in Perth in 2017. I went to my Year 12 muck-up day dressed as a KFC bucket of chicken, and my friend Asha went as the Colonel.

“My year 12 class wrapped the toilets and put jelly powder in the pool.”

“Instead of muck-up day, we had dress-up day! I went as one of the Teletubbies with a group of friends. I have pictures of that but would probably need everyone’s permission so I’ve attached a pic of me and another mate who went as Luigi from Mario Kart.

“I went to Pembroke and our senior school is separate from the middle school campus. Every year on muck-up day, the Year 12s would attempt to break into the middle school but the gates were always locked when they got there. It’s about 500m from the senior school.

“My year was having a disco in the courtyard of the senior school when all of a sudden, someone yelled “run!” and without asking what was going on, the entire year of 200 sprinted to the middle school, made it in before the gates were locked and continued our disco there.”

Ben Mingay, star of Bright Lights and Big Dreams by State Opera SA

“I don’t have photos (thank god) but on muck-up day in year 12, we carried our science teacher’s Morris Mini Minor from the car park, into the school and placed it in the Quadrangle garden.”

James Nicholson, State Opera performer

“At muck-up day we superglued the science teacher’s items on the teacher’s desk. And superglued some books to ceiling of the science room.”
