‘Much loved, enthusiastic’: Tributes for mother-of-three Mel Copeland, who was killed in a motorbike crash in Elizabeth Downs

A mother of three has died after she slammed into the back of a parked car while riding her motorbike in the northern suburbs on Tuesday night.

A beloved mother of three killed after she slammed into the back of a parked car while riding her motorbike north of Adelaide has been identified as 39-year-old Mel Copeland.

Police and emergency services were called to Midway Rd, Elizabeth Downs at about 9:50pm on Tuesday night, after reports that a motorbike had collided with a parked car.

Sadly, Ms Copeland died at the scene.

On Wednesday, one of three children posted heartfelt words to a Facebook tribute post by Ms Copeland’s cricket club, as friends and family paid tribute to her at the scene.

“RIP mum. Not enough words will ever explain the hole left in my heart … miss you mummy and I love you so much,” her daughter wrote.

Residents said they heard the crash and rushed to Ms Copeland’s aid, but were too late.

Local Garry McElroy told 9 News Adelaide that he heard a loud “bang” before running outside to find Ms Copeland lying on the road.

“I heard a big bang and then I seen her on the ground, and I walked out and over to her … I couldn’t do nothing, I couldn’t do nothing at all … poor lady,” he said.

CCTV captured Ms Copeland riding along the road just seconds before the crash, also showing witnesses running towards her to help, with police on the scene within seconds.

Local Ian Chase also spoke to 9 News Adelaide, saying he saw the aftermath of the crash.

“As soon as I got out here the cops had arrived, and then I seen the person lying on the road,” he said.

Ms Copeland was riding her Suzuki motorbike when it slammed into the back of a silver Holden Commodore sedan.

She was a popular cricketer and was the current captain of the Salisbury West Cricket Club, which posted a touching tribute for her on Wednesday.

“On behalf of the greater Salisbury West Cricket Community we pass on our deepest condolences to the Copeland family on the loss of Mel,” the post read.

“We extend our love and support to her children, partner, family, friends and all those affected by this tragic news.

“She was a much loved, enthusiastic member of our Cricket club and current Women’s Captain.

“We are all shocked and saddened by this news and Mel will forever hold a special place in the hearts of her Westies cricket family.”

Midway Rd was closed for several hours as major crash investigators examined the scene.

Major Crash Investigators are now reviewing the CCTV and investigating whether speed was a factor.

Ms Copeland’s death is the 17th life lost on SA roads so far this year.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
