Northern Connector speed limit to be increased to 110km/h helping motorists set to shave even more time off their daily commute

Motorists have been flocking to the Northern Connector. Now the State Government has announced when motorists can travel at 110km/h.

Motorists will be able to drive at 110km/h on the Northern Connector for the first time, shaving more time off their commute to and from work and making a trip to the Barossa Valley even quicker.

The speed limit on the new roadway had been capped at 80km/h since it was opened on March 4.

But Infrastructure Minster Stephan Knoll has confirmed the speed limit will go up from about 11am Wednesday.

The Northern and Southern Interchanges will remain 60km/h until successful testing occurs, which expected later this month and early next month.

Mr Knoll said about 55,000 motorists a day are expected to use the Northern Connector, cutting about 10 minutes off their journeys.

“The Northern Connector is a huge shot in the arm for regional tourism and freight productivity, especially for areas including the Barossa, Riverland, Yorke Peninsula, Mid North and beyond,” Mr Knoll said.

RAA spokesman Charles Mountain welcomed the increase speed limit.

“Motorists have warmly welcomed the connector and with the speed limit being increased will be able to realise the travel time saving benefits,” Mr Mountain said.

“The speed was initially reduced to help bed in the surface of the new road – which is fairly normal procedure – and allow motorists to familiarise themselves with the layout.”

The opening of the $867m Northern Connector project came as a relief to motorists in the northern suburbs who had been waiting for the project that had been delayed almost four months.

The Northern Connector has three new lanes in each direction and offers drivers the opportunity to bypass the traffic on the existing route along Port Wakefield Road and Salisbury Highway.
