More Gawler rail line disruptions ahead just months after it finally reopened after 18 months

Even though the newly electrified Gawler rail line only just reopened, more service disruptions are about to hit – for a month.

Passengers using the Gawler rail line will again experience pain just months after the line reopened after services stopped for 18 months.

In a move that will likely spark backlash for northern-suburbs passengers, the Department of Transport said the line would be closed most Saturday and Sunday nights for almost a month.

The services will not run between Adelaide Railway Station and Mawson Interchange Railway station in both directions from 9pm until the last service on the weekend from September 17 to October 16.

The Gawler line reopened only in June this year after a major electrification project halted services since December 2020.

The closures exclude services on the October long weekend on the 2nd and 3rd of the month.

“Trains will resume normal running from first-service Sunday and Monday morning

respectively throughout the partial closure period,” the statement said.

During the closures the Gawler line will continue between Mawson Interchange and Gawler Central Railway stations with substitute buses to operate between Adelaide and Mawson Interchange.

The upgrades include concrete pouring, painting, and lighting installation at the Ovingham Railway Station.

“The works will include concrete pouring, painting and lighting installation and cannot be undertaken safely with trains operating in the rail corridor,” the department said.

“Adelaide Metro apologies for any inconvenience and thanks commuters for their patience while these important works are undertaken.”

Darren Phillips SA secretary from the Rail, Tram and Bus Union, said drivers would likely have modified working arrangements during the partial closures.

“There’s been no consultation with us of any impact, so I’d probably have to get in contact with Keolis Downer to see if there is any impact,” Mr Phillips said.

Keolis Downer declined to provide comment to The Advertiser, referring all inquiries to the Department of Transport.
