Ali Clarke will have more surgery as she continues her brave battle against breast cancer.
The popular radio host revealed on Friday that she is having a second mastectomy as a “safety” precaution and will take several weeks off the air.
Seven’s Rosanna Mangiarelli will fill in for Clarke on Mix 102.3’s breakfast show alongside Max Burford, starting on Monday.
Clarke said the decision to have her second breast removed – about three months after her first mastectomy – was about “taking some control back”.
“For us, it’s a safety thing, it’s also a bit of taking control back, more so for the kids because you know I’m doing this without worrying about cancer and everything else,” the mother-of-three said on Mix on Friday morning.
“Even though that’s in the background, but it’s just the choice we’ve made, and we are very, very comfortable with it.”
Mangiarelli said she was excited to join the Mix breakfast show and wished Clarke all the best.
“Ali, how you’ve handled this whole hurdle has been absolutely amazing and hat’s off to you, you’re a real trooper,” she said.
“I just wanted to wish you all the very best for the next step in what’s been a pretty scary thing…we talk about physical changes but you know a lot of us forget about what the emotional impact it has as well, so best of luck.”
In late July, Clarke announced on-air that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.
She said there was no history of the disease in her family, but that she had a routine mammogram on the advice of her GP.
Clarke said her doctor had wanted to do a full health check after she went to see them because she was concerned about what she thought were symptoms of perimenopause.
Her announcement resulted in an immediate uptick to the number of women contacting BreastScreen for scans.
The following month, Clarke was back on the airwaves to help launch Mix102.3’s Breast Check Day on the first Friday of every month.
