- Why doctors need a more man-friendly manner
Heart disease is the biggest killer in the country and is responsible for close to 13 per cent of deaths in Australian men — but it is not just older men at risk.
Heart Foundation SA chief executive Imelda Lynch says men aged 18 to 34 are more than twice as likely than their female counterparts to have four or more risk factors of heart disease.
“The theme of this year’s Men’s Health Week is keeping boys and men healthy, Ms Lynch said.
From good diet and regular exercise to quitting smoking, moderation in alcohol, noting warning signs and seeing your GP, men can take steps to help maintain their heart health.
“As part of Men’s Health Week, the Heart Foundation will be running a stall and making a presentation in Adelaide on Thursday at the Men’s Health Week Forum and Expo,” Ms Lynch said.
The expo, organised by the Council on the Ageing SA, will have speakers and information on a range of topics which include nutrition, physical activity and many other health-related issues.
Ms Lynch will today kick off the first of The Advertiser’s live chats for Men’s Health Week at 12.30pm at Advertiser.com.au.
Men’s Health Week runs from June 10-16 to remind men to check in on their mates and make an appointment for a health check up.
